Hydrographic Survey Tide Gauges Installed

8 January 2010, London. As part of the mobilization phase for the hydrographic survey of Area 1 in the Traffic Separation Scheme (TSS) in the Straits of Malacca and Singapore, the MEH Project contractor, GEMS Survey Limited, installed two tide gauges at Port Dickson and Pulau Lumut in Malaysia recently (2 – 7 January 2010). A third installation will be carried out in Bagan Asahan pending approval by the Indonesian Authorities. A total of four tide gauges will be installed for the survey.

A key hydrographic survey within the Traffic Separation Scheme (TSS) of the Straits of Malacca and Singapore is now underway, as part of the Marine Electronic Highway (MEH) Demonstration Project, a regional project of the Global Environment Facility (GEF)/World Bank, which IMO is executing.

Third Meeting of the Project Steering Committee held in Singapore

Third Meeting of the Project Steering Committee held in Singapore

Update from the Third Meeting of the Project Steering Committee, which was held in Singapore from 13 to 15 July 2010. The meeting was hosted by the Government of Singapore and was co-organized by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore and IMO. During this session the progress of the MEH Demonstration Project was discussed, in particular, the implementation of various activities which followed the field survey of the Malacca Straits.

IMO & MEH Demonstration Project were at the 3rd Co-operation Forum and 3rd Project Coordination Committee Meetings, Yogyakarta 6th – 8th October 2010

The Co-operative Mechanism on Safety of Navigation and Environmental Protection of the Straits of Malacca and Singapore was established by the three littoral States in 2007 to facilitate cooperation with user States, users of the Straits and other key stakeholders on issues of navigational safety and marine environment protection to keep the Straits safe and open for international navigation.

Littoral States’ Hydrographic Officers Attend the ENC Production Software Training in Melaka, Malaysia

As part of its capacity building activity, the MEH Demonstration Project held a hands-on training course on the use of the ENC Production Tools software for 10 Hydrographers from Indonesia and Malaysia. The training course was held in Tanjung Kling, Melaka, Malaysia from 8 to 12 November 2010.

Development of the MEH Data Centre in Batam, Indonesia Initiated

Following months of work in the preparation of technical specifications for a MEH Data Centre and subsequent tendering and contract negotiation, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) on behalf of the MEH Demonstration Project signed a contract with GMT Cybernetics Co., Ltd. based in the Republic of Korea on 1 December 2010 for the supply, installation, commission, and training on the hardware and software of the MEH Data Centre. The effectivity of the contract commenced on its signing and is expected to be completed in five months.

Hydrographic Survey Activity for the Malacca Straits Traffic Separation Scheme Area Off One Fathom Bank Nearing Completion

During the period from 10 February to 4 April 2010, GEMS Survey Limited based in Devizes, Wiltshire, United Kingdom carried out a hydrographic survey of an area of the Traffic Separation Scheme in the Malacca Straits under contract by IMO. In September 2010, the contractor made its first delivery of the expected outputs of this activity. As part of quality control process, the MEH Oversight Team and the Hydrographic Offices of the littoral States held several sessions to verify the survey data and information and in some sessions with the participation of the contractor, shifting through and cross-examining the materials with a target objective of having a successful survey with useful products. This activity is close to completion.
